Need some quick crank pully help

I'm replacing a squeaky crank pulley on my 85 SPG.
The bolt holding it to the crankshaft came loose way too easily.
When I removed the pulley, there was no key in the slot. Looking and feeling around the crankshaft snout... I feel nothing but the smooth curve of the shaft.
Looking further, the oilpump cover is exceptionally clean and the front seal looks like new (I've owned the car 5 years and only drive it on nice weekends). I suspect between the cleanliness of the pump cover and seal, along with the bolt not being anywhere near the torque specified, that the pulley has been off before... and possibly replaced without the key.
Question... does the key normally come out with the pulley, or, when I slide the new pulley on, is the key further up the shaft where the pulley will have to be rotated slightly to lock into place?
Thanks!
Jon
