In the past, I have used a tool from the dirtbike toolbox for large springs. Even on the rear caliper parking brake springs for the NG900 and 9-3 models.
It is a tool made for exhaust pipe springs on 2 stroke bikes. It is a T Handle wrench of sorts but has a nice hook on the end. Really makes and work with stretching springs much easier and safer.
I think it was only $10 or so.
