First off, if your getting enough coolant though the exhaust, the engine should barely run. Here are some things to check to confirm HG.
-Are you losing coolant in the tank? Is it over pressurizing and overflowing? Open the tank (when cold) and smell the air in there, does it smell like burnt gas/oil or just coolant? Any oil in the coolant tank?
-Pull the plugs. If the HG is leaking in one cylinder, the plug will be really really clean when compared to other three. Its being steam cleaned in essence.
-If you have the original turbo setup on your 85, then it is only oil cooled/lubed without coolant so that eliminates that as a possible suspect. If you have the later style bolted on, perhaps you have a crack in the water jacket (I vote this if plugs are good and engine is running fine)
-Any coolant in the oil? Will look milky not amber or brown/black.
Yes, they do just "let go" at times, but usually give warning signs such as stuttering, signs on the plugs, using coolant etc.
