Hi,
I have an 89 (well it's 90% parts ville now).If your hall sensor was at the crank pulley "I'd bet on" as when it begins to fail it often does its job until it heats up. But I think on the 89 (CORRECT me if I'm wrong other posters)both turbo and 900S had hall sensor on the distributor. But I am uncertain of that as my 1990 900 S has a crank pulley hall sensor.
Other things to consider . Ignition coil going bad when heated. Distributor rotor finger (I've had two go bad). Sooo when it stops have a freind with you and if it will run in driveway and stop all the better. As soon as it stops, pull the center wire from the distributor and see if
you have spark to the distributor use insulater pliers and hold the wire about 1/4 inch from metal like the top of the frame your hood closes into.Have someone try to start the engine IN NEUTRAL If you have spark there the coil and other components in the spark should be good. plug the wire back into the distributor Before you go further with the spark diagnosis, pull a small hose from the intake manifold and spray some starting fluid in for about 5 seconds. Connect the hose again and try to start. If it does and not too much time has gone by to allow items to coll then the problem may be fuel issue, If no firing then go to where the spark plugs are beneath a cover on the head, remove one wire from the plug and again using insulated plies and holding the plug wire near a metal area like the valve cover have someone try to start the engine. Since you said your mechanical skills are limited. Get some fellow to do these things. You read him the instructions and you turn the key.Sometimes computer dusting spray that has a very cold carrier can be used to cool the coil or even distributor to help narror down the problem.
