I've been down this road a couple times.
Start with:
replacing tired suspension parts, new koni or bilstein shocks, perhaps stiffer lower springs.
Make sure your brakes are in good working order, you don't really need bigger unless you hard track demands. You might want to replace the old rubber brakelines with braided stainless ones.
After making the car as well behaved as possible, then start the power increases.
APC Box. 3bar FPR. intake and exhaust upgrades as they will be needed to benefit future upgrades in addition to their own merit. I don't know about the 87's plumbing, but if you can put the turbo plumbing on an 89+, that will be a lot less restrictive. Then you can get to more expensive and esoteric things as are often debated on the performance board like intercoolers and BOVs, etc...
