You need to use the reverse release handle that is attached to the leather boot. It's shorter than the one with the rubber boot attached.
Center your shifter and then remove the three screws holding the shifter to the shifter housing and pull the shifter out. Then follow the disassembly instruction at the link I posted below (up to step #8). If you have a shifter with the plastic pivot ball it will be a little different, but the instructions will help.
It's a good idea to relube inside the shifter housing while you have things apart.
If the leather boot is a little worn you can touch it up with Feibing's Leather Dye which is available at tack shops and shoe repair places.
