Let me suggest an alternative route. I bought a similar set up to replace the rubber boot on my 1993 900S. The leather boot should be able to be removed from the shifter you just bought. Turn the leather boot inside out and look for a wire tie that cinches the boot to the shifter rod and unwind. This should allow the boot's removal. Remove the shift knob on your current shifter, it should pull off if you wiggle and pull up gradually. Peel up the rubber boot from its square, metal base mount and lift over the shifter to remove. Now, turn the leather boot inside out. Lower the boot, narrow opening first, over the shifter until it natuarlly stops a couple of inches down. Tightly cinch the wire tie around the boot at this point. Turn the boot (still over the top of the shifter) right side out, and lower down to the mounting plate and affix (it's a tight fit, so you may have to stretch the leather base out at this point.) You may also have to play with exactly where you cinch the wire tie on the shifer, but you'll get the lenght of the boot right at some point. Replace the shifter knob, you should be good to go!
