Your cams press directly down on a metal cylinder that has a self adjusting mechanism in it which works off of the oil pressure (I believe that is true of all 16 valve heads)and that presses directly down on the valve to open it. The older 8 valve heads had a shim in them that you have to adjust. Anywho, the mechanism usually doesn't go bad, but can have buildup in it. So you might try a high quality high detergent oil or something like Marvel Mystery Oil added to your next oil change. Should your tappets have gone bad then you will have to pull the valve cover & camshaft to replace them.
