I never used a torque wrench when I did mine. I just used a new nut and, as you said, tightened the snot out of it. After that I used a punch and a good whack with a hammer to peen the nut at the end where it meets the threads on the spline. I didn't overdo it, just one good whack. That should keep the nut from backing off.
