Sears sells (or did...) a torque wrench good for 250 foot-lbs. 1/2 " drive. Under $100 last I checked the price. Of course, so do other places, like snap-on, etc.
If you look very carefully at the outer end of the nut (the part without the hex) you will see that it is formed into a kind of triangle. This way the threads line up & don't mess up anything, but they also grip, and prevent the nut from backing off.
This is why you should use new nuts any time you remove them. A nut used a second time does not have the same ability to resist backing off as a new one.
