You can fit a '94+ head on an earlier block, but it requires quite a bit of modification to make it work. Lesco/Group9 does this work - the later heads are much better than the earlier ones in terms of design.
As for a ported 2.0l head flowing better than a 2.1l head, I'm gonna say "duh." A personally optimized head better than something that rolled off a factory line? Of course it'll be better. But you can score 2.1l heads for pretty cheap, and they are better than a stock 2.0l head. If you've got the money, sure, have one worked up, but if you're looking for bolt-on, my money is on the 2.1l. I'd also say dropping compression a tad is probably useful if you plan on running big(ger) boost.
Heads with internal oil passages are mid year '88 and onwards...
My $0.02, YMMV...
