I have been using 1" square hollow aluminum tube for years, and it's great. I used the hollow stuff because it deforms slightly - it's softer than the bodywork and doesn't damage it. It also fits perfectly, and the slight deformation ensures it stays in place.
I bought a 3' long section years and years ago, and cut off 4 2" sections (2 per a-arm) of it to use for spacers. Periodically one gets smashed beyond usefulness, but I still have 1' of the stuff left so it's pretty durable. :) I use them 8-10 times per year on half a dozen cars, so they see quite a bit of use.
Definitely better than bolts, nuts, and wood, and IMHO as good as the factory tools (which I used to own).
