I doubt bad gas would cause the CEL. Now, if the car was sputtering and coughing, it could be bad gas.
Actually, the CEL should not flicker. If the LH computer detects a fault, most faults should cause it to latch on. I would suspect the light is actually on, but you've got a bad connection at the light, or there is a grounding problem at the LH computer.
I *guess* you could have a bad connection at the AMM, or a bad AMM. A bad AMM puts the LH into a limp-home mode (and a CEL), and if you were bopping in and out of Limp-home (NOT the same as TCS limp-home on a 9000) because of a bad connection, it might flicker.
As to the clutch - It isn't adjustable as far as I know. You might have something preventing full travel - like a cruise control switch that is adjusted wrong, or just some bent metal. There also might be something interfering with the Slave cylinder travel. As I remember (and it's been a while), the clutch pedal is somewhat closer to the floor than the brake, but I could be wrong. I'd look for a mechanical interference. Can you lift the pedal up from where it sits? That would indicate a problem at the slave cylinder or the clutch plate.
I assume this is a New To You car, so therefore all bets are off. After 20 years, one never knows what maintenance (if any, or hacked-up) has been done. So don't assume anything is right until you verify it yourself.
