First of all - it's 5 minutes work to replace VR.
Regarding uneven wear of VR outputs - there's DC current that runs there, right? DC means that one output has say "+" potential and another has "-" potential. Although current (in metals) is just a motion of electrons but it happens that an electron hits an atom on his way from "-" to "+" terminal.
If you have a look at spark plugs that haven't been replaced for too much time on a car having "wasted spark" ignition system (on a such system coil runs 2 spark plugs) you'll see that one spark will have the central electrode worn out and another spark plug will have the side electrode worn out. This happens cause on the 1st spark plug current runs from central electrode to the side one and on the 2nd spark plug it's vice versa.
