I discovered in my '90 that you're better off using 10W-30 than 80W-90 gear oil. My car is garaged, so 10W-30 would probably be OK most days for me. I just want great shifting ALL the time, even on the few occassions when I leave work & it's -10F. My son's '85 was always parked outside (he's now in AZ), so when it got below 10F or 15F it was too stiff to shift. But that's just for our shifting preferences.
Two local Saab garages (mine included) rely on BG SyncroShift II as a "last resort" when nothing else will help a poorly shifting tranny. It's a syn fluid, & it works wonderfully. I just couldn't afford $15/qt to change it every 30k mi! I started using 5W-40 to keep the protection high while keeping costs in line. If you're suspicious of true syn, use Rotella T Syn 5W-40 instead. It's a Group III oil, so it doesn't have the same friction characteristics as a true Group IV syn like Mobil 1.
For my own Saabs, I would never use a Honda-specific fluid. I don't believe it offers anywhere close to the same protection I can get with syn motor oil in the tranny. But again, that's just me.
