What does the battery voltage do when you crank the engine? If the voltage drops down to 6 or 7 volts, the battery is shot.
If the battery voltage is OK, how are the battery clamps and cables?
From the sound of it, the battery voltage is being pulled down. Flickering lights, clicking sounds, starter not turning over implies low voltage to the entire car, not just the starter. The common point is the battery, clamp, and cables. Don't ignore the ground cable - a bad connection on either positive or negative is a problem.
