electric antenna mast woes - a bit long

My apologies in advance as I am sure this topic has been touched on numerous times before. My 94 vert seems to eat power antennas. It needs a new mast about every 2-3 years and this is on a car that spends most of it's life in the garage and only sees a couple thousand summer miles each year. The antenna never gets dirty, but I clean it all the time, just to be sure grit doesn't get in there. I have a new mast from eeuroparts and the instructions. All goes well until the base of the mast enters the part of the tube that comes up from the motor in the car. The little brass colored ring at the base of the mast binds in the tube and it will only sit in about a 1/2". It appears to need to go down about 3" or an amount equal to the silver metal retaining sleeve. If I put the sleeve in w/o the mast, it slides right in. I've already pushed on the mast too hard and pushed the whole motor assembly down in the car and had to pull the trunk apart, remove it the antanna motor and bend the bracket back into shape. There doesn't appear to be any obstruction in the tube. Any thoughts or suggestions? I guess this is why they put fixed antennas on the current verts.
Thanks,
Van
