Thanks to all for suggestions. Patience was the name of the game here. I followed Hans advice and carefully filed down the brass ring on the base of the new mast. While at it, I used a round file and carefully reamed out the inside of tube on the motor assembly. Then took that apart to clean out all the filings. Everything fit together nicely and it's back in the car. I did trim the plastic antenna cord about 5". I've noticed that with my old mast, the motor would run longer than necessary to raise or lower the antenna and it would click an extra 3 times going up and down as if striping gears. By cutting back 5" it now only makes one extra click on the way up. I'd like to get rid of the last click, but I don't dare cut it any shorter. On a side note, I fitted an old original saab fixed whip antenna that I had kicking around during the few days I had the power antenna out being worked on. I think reception is better with the whip. But I didn't want to cut a hole in my cover for the whip antenna and mess around with that, so the retractable is better for me.
