The starter can be swapped without disturbing any other bolts or the manifold. You remove the clutch or torque converter cover (removing any Turbo or air inlet plumbing as needed), loosen the dipstick tube (pull out the clip that's on the side of the dipstick tube toward the manifold). Remove the wires from the starter (you did disconnect the battery, right?), and, if ther are any others obviously in the way, disconnect them, and get them out of the way. Many wires can simply be moved out of the way.
Now, the starter is held in by two bolts at the snout, and a bracket on the back, which goes to a bolt to the block. Remove the block bolt from the bracket. On the snout, you will need a box wrench, and a hex (allen key) wrench. The bolts on the snout are countersunk into the aluminum gable plate, hence the need for the hex wrench. It's also possible that they changed that to Torx in later years, I'm not sure, as it's been a while.
Once everything is loose, pass the starter down along the block, tilting the snout up, if I recall, then you can reach down and pull the starter up by the snout. You may need to remove the air filter box and hoses as well for clearance.
It's not so bad, really.
