85 SPG with intermittent spark Posted by twells [Email] (#1632) [Profile/Gallery] (more from twells) on Fri, 3 Jul 2009 04:36:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I just purchased an 85 SPG with 220K miles and it initially ran fine. This is my 4th 1985 Saab over the last 14 years, and I've pretty much done all my own mechanical work. Now, it won't start -- most of the time, and when it won't start, there is no spark. When checking the 2 & 4 terminals for voltage at the ignition control module (ICM), I am only getting 0.06 volts. No volts with ignition off. I did not find any problems, but had checked several connectors, etc. and then (without checking for voltage at the ICM) hit the starter and it started and idled fine for about 10-15 minutes then quit running abruptly as if I had turned off the ignition. To complicate matters, this car has a SAAB Guard Vehicle Alarm System, built by Micronics, mounted under the rear seat. I don't have a manual for the alarm and can't find a website for Micronics. I thought I would remove the alarm and see if it made a difference, but its wiring harness is well integrated with the wiring that runs along the left side of the center console, to the point that the wires run through the big plastic protector that lies along the shift shaft. So, although it appears aftermarket, the way it is wired almost looks like a factory install. Does anyone have experience with these alarms? I could not find any previous posts on Saab Guard. Other thoughts regarding this no start?
Thanks,
Tim
