but makes me look sort of clever
around this time - it may have been 86 but possibly earlier if you have some special early release first on the block model Saab introduced something called an ignition pulse amplifier into the main relay/fuse box.
Took me awhile to track my intermittent no start problem down but jumpering the connections (Bentley has details or check this site) remedied the problem.
If you don't have the amplifier and if you are using the hall sensor/amplifier combo - likely in your case - I would walk through the procedure laid out by Bentley. What's kind of cool is all you need is a 20 dollar voltmeter to test all the components. You can simulate the Hall "effect" by rotating your distributor by hand and testing the integrity of the connections to/from the sensor/igniter. It doesn't take much to render your ignition useless - one intermittent connection, one poorly grounded component is all it takes. That's why I never cease to be amazed that these cars seem to run forever with minimal attention. Knock on faux wood dash.
