Firestone's had a long, repeated history of inadequate design & build problems. These started with their Firestone 500 passenger tires in the '70's, continued with the 721 model into the '80's, & most recently was exposed in their AT/ATX SUV tires in '01. I think all brands have their problems, but I'd never put Firestone's on anything I owned or ever recommend them to any friends or family.

BF Goodrich (owned & built by Michelin) is probably one of the better values in a safe tire. It's also one of the most over-built tires on the market, with wider tread & stronger/heavier casing than most of its cost competitors. If you live someplace without snow or ice, their Traction T/A is probably the best 3-season tire I've ever driven on my '90 C900. Get the T-rated version for a longer tire life & more comfortable ride than their (very stiff-walled) H-rated version. The price should be similar to what you're finding for the Affinitys, at about $275-$300 for a set of four. (If you want decent winter traction too, their "original" tread pattern on their Radial T/A is a better choice.)

Uniroyal & Continental are two more fantastic brands at less-than-premium prices. I've driven Conti tires on my parent's Euro vehicles & like them a lot. It's only the great price & performance of the BFGs that keeps me from putting them on my C900. I've only heard second-hand reports on Uni tires, but the feedback is always positive & their durability/reliability is said to be second-to-none.
