The hardest part of the whole thing was finding a few parts. To just bolt the engine & transmission in, you need the motor mounts brackets from a 1985 900T or an '86 900S (I *think*). Only that car, only that year. Once you have those Crazy. Alternatively, you can convert to hydraulic mounts - the driver's side bolts right in, but the passenger's side requires drilling a single hole IIRC. Not difficult, just a little time consuming to ensure you get it right. The wiring harness really needs to come from an '86 900 (t for turbo, s for not) or you get 1985 crumbling wiring harness and/or under the rear seat APC box. Even '86s suffer a little from wiring harness issues, so you need to be careful.
Once that's secured, putting the engine in is just like any other c900 installation, and quite painless. The fusebox *mostly* bolts right in - there are a few wires you need to move on the car side, and you need to remember that some fuses don't work as you expect - to make up an example, fuse 11 might control the horns & windshield wipers on the 1979, whereas the fuse 11 is horns and fuse 12 is wipers on the '86. When you swap the harness, it'll be fuse 11 handling both again... that's because the interior wiring didn't change. I hope that makes sense. Also, you will need to install a few new wires - things like the APC pressure transducer and the stereo wiring, for example. Everything else pretty much just works. I have a spreadsheet that's a good detail of everything between the '80 and the '86 - you're welcome to a copy whenever you get there.
Nice thing about swapping fuseboxes is that installing LH fuel injection on that 16v motor becomes very easy - if you go LH 2.2 it's brain dead; if you go LH 2.4 you need to string some wiring through the dash and swap the speedometer. There is obviously room to mount the LH ECU bracket on the side of the car, but the carpet isn't formed to handle that, so you either need to live with some ill-fitting carpet, or replace the carpet too.
That's all that comes to mind. I should note that my car didn't come with and doesn't have A/C, so no idea how that works. No cruise control either. A/C shouldn't be a problem, cruise control would require some custom wiring but also shouldn't be difficult at all.
I think your '79 will have a metal gas tank? You will need/want to find a plastic one from an '80 (*maybe* an '81, too). Another hard to find item.
