My car has not been able to hold a charge. I thought it was a bad battery. Today, as my neighbor was helping me jumpstart it, he noticed as the engine turned over that the alternator was wiggling around like a bobblehead. Light bulb went off in my head.
The car has been sputtering and running rough and not holding a charge on the battery. It idles poorly until it dies. The engine light has been on. Black smoke has been coming from the tailpipe. During this time, I've only driven it to move it from one side of the street to the other for street cleaning. I didn't want to make a $20 problem turn into a $2000 problem.
With the loose alternator, will tightening it up resolve the other problems mentioned above (sputtering, black smoke, battery charge, poor idle)? I am having the alternator tightened tomorrow and am excited that it will purr like a kitten.
Yet, I'm nervous that a ghost is looming. I'd like to think that I'm almost free to smile and get back on the highway with the top down.
Why would an alternator go loose in the first place? Strange, beautiful car...I have to say. Any thoughts?
