rear suspension question

I have been trying to figure out if it is adviseable to drive a small amount after removing a rear shock due to its upper body mount rotting out . After examining diagrams of the rear suspesion I can't find any component other than the shock that prevents the spring link from traveling downward to far in a situation such as rebound from a large bump . By too far I mean the spring extends fully and then the spring link continues to travel downward possibly unseating the spring . The Bently does say that " the saab 900 shocks are of a unique design incorporating a special stop " . It then goes on to say one must use OEM or suspension damage will result . Is the shock really preventing the spring link and spring from over extending ? This doesn't seem correct to me , but I don't see anything else doing this job . I must be overlooking something . Hopefully someone here can explain how this setup really works .
