How to become a DIYer... Do you suggest a course?

Hi folks!
I'm not very handy at all and happen to love old SAABs. I feel like I need to learn how to get working on them a little on my own. Would you suggest a basic mechanic's course to get me started, or are the quirks on these cars so significant as to make basic training somewhat irrelevant? I'm not sure I'd feel very comfortable just buying a manual and "experimenting" with a car on which I rely for safe transportation...
What are your thoughts and experiences? Recommendations?
THanks a lot!
Brian
