You can get books and dvd's that instruct one how to work on cars, but hands-on experience is the best.
I drive old saabs ('72 - '94) and have been stranded twice in 21 years, but those 2 times have been when I was unable to fix things myself. If the car is in good mechanical condition and you keep on top of the wear items, there's no reason one couldn't drive it daily with good results as I have had for many years. You just have to stay on top of things as they wear.
