Thanks to Larry for verifying it should hold vacuum. Mine is failing but has not failed completely yet. It almost holds vacuum.
Larry's posts are correct as to function and the use of a second one for the upshift light.
The part number for a 1985 is 8598195 and appears on the red cap. It is no longer available although Saab Site lists it for a different application that does not appear correct to me. Several people I spoke to today encouraged me not to substitue a later part. The later number is 9564865 but I am not sure what year it was first used. I sourced a used one from a site advertiser.
AND I count myself fortunate that there is no upshift light (or none working)!
