A couple of comments to add, it may not be your fuel sender at all, but the copper contact sheet on the back of your instrument cluster that is causing the problem. Over time the copper contact sheet warps and curls causing it to no longer make the connection to the back of the instrument cluster.
The smell in your cabin may not be a fuel pump seal either, it could be a leaky filler neck or in my case, a crank gas tank.....mine is cracked on the top of the tank and very hard to diagnose.....the car smells like fuel when I fill it up.....hence the leak on the top of that tank. Look under your tank, does the plastic have a wet look in certain areas? That's a leaker.
