you didn't say what year it was but if it has CIS the smell could be coming from your accumulator under the vehicle - they do fail and leak
wrt the sender - what i would do is first eliminate possibilities first at the gauge end
there are three wires running to your sender
one is ground, one is for the sender and one is for the idiot light
ground the wire that runs to the sender by holding it to the metal of the vehicle- with ignition on check the needle - it should be pegged all the way to the top. if it is then your gauge is working in your cluster and you need not go there
do the same thing with the idiot light wire - ground it - the light should go on and stay on - again if it does then the problem is not not at the instrument cluster end
if in both cases they do not work as above then your problem could be at either end BUT I would begin by checking the quality of the connections at your sender end first,(solid and shiny? well connected?
then i would pull the sender and test it with an ohmmeter - they do fail
a needle nose can get the sender out of the tank
