Well,
it's 12V boiler with approx 1 Ohm DC resistance so with 14V DC supplied it should give about 200 (rounded-up) watts. Water is having about 4200 joules per degree per kilogram. So it'll take about an hour for 4 liters (4/5 of washer tank volume) to be heated for 40 degrees up (Celsius or Kelvin), e.g. from -20C to 20C so there should be some margin of safety not to boil my washer out. Also both headlight lenses and windscreen would be heated up enough long before the washer (not to give me any cracks).
The inputs for this project are:
- Yes, I'm aware of special winter fluids
- I that guy who dilutes the winter fluid according to current outdoors temperature. It's not only about money but also about the alcohol that evaporates if its too strong. You pull the stick and see nice streams coming out from the nozzles, but in a few seconds you're having iced windscreen.
- I've got headlight washers on my C900 so my washer fluid consumption isn't that small as on cars lacking of headlight washers/wipers. And I'm not going to give headlight washers/wipers up!
- I'm that guy who can pour some mixture today and drive the car in a week or two. Having 0C today (32F) and -25C (-10F) the week after will give me a piece of ice instead of fluid in the washer tank
- it's a darn nice problem to get this boiler inside C900 stock tank and secure it that way so it will not damage the tank even if I turn it on and forget about it! And I solved it!
Well, I do know that I'm lacking of level and temperature sensors, but I'll probably add them after some run-in.
Stay tuned for more reports coming!
Zig
P.S.
The thing that I'm mostly afraid of is that the fluid will evaporate once heated up just like strong alcohol does. In this case this mod will be used only for defrosting purposes.
