I've noticed that the freeze plugs sometimes rust, leak, and the only remedy is replacement. Of course, if the freeze plugs have rusted, what does the rest of the coolant passages look like?
My engineer father in law tells me that freeze plugs are not there for freeze protection. They fill in a hole left by the sand core that makes the cooling water passage when the the block casting is poured at a foundry. The use of a plug gives the some freeze protection. The only time I actually needed freeze protection (coolant diluted) the block cracked - but the freeze plugs stayed put. I think the fact that they are usually just stamped steel causes them to rust much faster than the block.
I've seen, but never used, rubber freeze plugs. I see them all the time at local auto parts stores. This might be able to be used as a temporary fix.
If it was me,, I'd pay the $300.
