Was your seal the red viton or the black colored seal? I ruined one of the black ones with the shower drain tool, and then got the real seal from the dealer, and it was the later material, red viton.

I used a very very thin feeler gauge inside the lip so it could slip over the crank, after it was buttered up with grease, and the shower drain tool seated it down with no issues. I feel your pain.....
