As you can see, the advices are all over the map as for how to, how expensive and how much to service on a Saab 900.

So it pretty much comes down to you and yourself how much time and money to spend or save and what you are comfortable with.

As some others say to save your money and spend them on other more needed things. That's how I operate my business and maybe that's how your mechanic does too.
For every new customer and car I see, I give the car a full look over and a prioritized list of things to do. So even if the car came in for one service request, I might see something that is way more important and needs to be addressed before the service (like cracked control arms).

If nothing else is going on or have a lower priority scale, I opt for doing the service and doing it in a way where many and most service items are taken care of instead of piece mealing it here and there.
That way on a car with unknown service history, we have a clean slate and can better handle a problem if something start to act up further down the road since we know the the service items are out of the picture.

As for the auto transmission. It is many ways to skin a cat and the transmission service can be done in many different ways.

The complete and most costly way is to drain ATF and differential fluids and remove front and rear pan to replace filter, clean magnets, pans and check/adjust front brake band and then check and adjust the rear band from the outside.
If adjusting the bands, it is important he knows the ins and outs and have a special spacer for the inner band when adjusting.

After I have done a complete service like that on a car, I usually flush the transmission fluid for the next two major services before I drop the pans again to do it all over.
