K-Saab,
Like Swedecar said, serious damage is unlikely. You can't hardly damage the gearbox or the shaft projecting from the gearbox by lifting a small amount, it's done all the time. It sounds like your problem is inside the shift lever box. The rod from the lever to the coupling probably got twisted or angled and has jammed but it should be an easy fix once you get it apart. As soon as you remove the shift lever you may be able to free the shaft.
