I have never had a problem lifting the engine up "about an inch" while replacing pumps or right motor mount.
It is plenty of play in that long shifter shaft.
You probably just have top remove the center console and see what happened in there or disconnect shifter shaft at the joint and see if it is inside transmission or at shifter box.
Did you have the ignition turned on or off?
Could it be that the reverse lockout have moved out of alignment and that you need to wiggle the shifter and turn the key at the same time?
