The fact that you can pump the pedal and make the clutch work properly is a sure sign of a bad master cylinder. As the seals wear out the symptoms are first noticeable in cold weather. Take a good look at the hose that goes from the reservoir to the MC, if it's leaking that explains the lost brake fluid. Did you pull back the floor mat beneath the clutch pedal to see if there is fluid back there? That's usually where it goes when the MC leaks externally.
