Coldshot - I don't understand the mechanics of it, but my understanding is that when the car is facing uphill, the weight of the car prevents it from coming out of reverse gear. In other words, the weight of the car -- which naturally wants go go downhill -- is borne by the reverse gear. That, in effect, forces it to stay engaged.
Sorry that I'm not really doing your question justice. Perhaps someone else can shed some light on this?
