High-mounted climate/radio controls Posted by MattWiltse [Email] (#263) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MattWiltse) on Sun, 20 Dec 2009 20:27:17 In Reply to: Re: Not a fan, mlarsen, Sun, 20 Dec 2009 19:09:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Excellent point, I also appreciate the radio & climate controls... my Mercedes has an INSANELY complicated stereo, mounted low on the dash. Making matters worse, the buttons are all small rectangles, so forget operating it by feel. Mercedes dashboards, especially the radios, are not ergonomic masterpieces. BMW is only moderately better. SAAB & Volvo are truly superior in this respect.
In fact, the most user friendly dashboard I have used was my old '78 Rabbit, back in high school (the final German ones). "Just the facts", as Joe Friday would say, all falling to easy reach, without removing your hands from the wheel, and a layout so simple even a teen couldn't misinterpret its messages. The SAAB is nearly as well located, and manages to squeeze in all of the toys I have come to appreciate as an adult.
The 9-5 carries on this tradition, whereas the 9-3 feels very corporate Opel/GM. The older car's components, in fact the dashboard structure within finger's reach, as your hands rest on the wheel. I find this one of the primary traits I associate with SAAB, even more than the ignition mounted on the floor.
