The problem could be in the gear shifter assembaly. Get/look-up a picture of the complete gear shifter assembaly inside the car and see what type of parts are involved. My sister had a Japanese car that I had to replace a lower shifter rod bushing at the bottom of the shift rod. I don't know whats involved with the c900 5 speed, since both of the c900s that I drive are automatics. Hopefully you didn't try forcing the shifter too hard. This can bend the shifter fork inside the transmission. Sounds more like the clutch hydraulic system isn't working properly. Try changing the brake/clutch fluid completly and flush the old transmission oil out. Then check the shifter componants. If this all has little effect, then I would think the hydraulic system isn't allowing the clutch plate to disengaged.
