Grooves develope into the inner cup and outer wheel C/V hub which causes the clicking or knocking. Easier, if the C/V joint has wear, to replace with a remanded complete axle. Remanded axles come with boots, clamps, grease and sometimes a new axle nut. Remanufacturers regrind the ball bearing groove area and install bigger ball bearings and leave the tripod in-place, which never seem to wear. I've disassembled many axles to clean reboot and grease. A very messy job and most always ends up having wear which will leave you with axles that will need replacing sooner. Unless your axles have just received a torn boot and doesn't have excessive wear, just buy remand axles for places like "http://www.rockauto.com". They offer sevaral brands. I usually buy the "Cardone". $64 - $70 ea. Just add grease and bolt on. Use a plastic bag over the tripod/boot before sliding through the axle tunnel. After sliding, remove bag. This will help keep dirt from getting into the needle bearings.
