That is a good plan -- I always save the oil to look to see what is in it after the 1st drain. If there are chunks, they can be reviewed to determine what parts have disintegrated....the drain plug has a magnet on it that will no doubt grown a nice head of hair. Look for the bronze "tint" or metalflake like patina that goes along with old oil from wearing gearbox parts. What you find in addition to dirty oil can tell you why certain sounds or operational difficulties can be present until you decide to have the box rebuilt.
