Derf, thanks for responding about my Dodge 2.7L DOHC. All metal chains and gears in this engine. No chain skipping during the original episode with the broken valve spring that I know of. All of the sprockets and chains looked good when it was dismantled but we decided to replace the main chain and tensioner since this is one of the weakest parts of this piece of junk engine.
The thought crossed my mind that they may have fouled up the timing either on the short chain across the DOHC's or the main chain when they were putting it back together. The engine seemed to run ok until it did the sputter, tapping and conking out episode after about 15 minutes of run time. It seems like if they were one link off when putting it together, that it wouldn't have run right. I keep wondering if they were off on one of the 3 chains or the DOHC short chain on one of the heads, but since this is a collision engine, wouldn't it have wiped all of the valves out on start up?
