Sorry for this logical display of information. I'm a philosopher by trade. Analyze analyze.
My check engine light has been coming on, flickering, staying on for a few minutes. The car has been idling and more or less running at 2000+ rpms with the throttle being open... causing a vacuum leak. I cleaned the throttle body with throttle dust cleanser stuff. That seemed to do the trick, but it still gets up to 2000 rpms after I have been driving it for a bit. Is there anything more I should clean? I have been all over the vacuum hoses.. all of those are fine. Sometimes the one right on top of the intake manifold falls off but thats not causing this issue.
When Im shifting and take my foot off the pedal... the rpms (as long as the throttle isnt stuck) drop violently and the transmission bangs. That makes it hard to downshift... and the engine is still rotating when I go to shift.. even at low rpms with foot off gas. You can hear/feel it spinning.. and it will spin for awhile after I take my foot off the gas... Normally I wait for it to stop before shifting. Fun driving... dont hurt car by shifting when its spinning and being crazy but have people behind me!!!!
I've worked with SAAB mechanics people on this. Since boosting was an issue, the wastegate was removed and put in the little boost controller... and that seemed to help with more air pressure in the engine and way better fuel economy. But eventually it just got worse even without the wastegate.
Because, even with the boost set higher... the car fluctuates... sometimes no power... sometimes amazing power, scary rocket power. That happened today -- scary rocket -- and I opened the hood... the whole entire engine was shaking and it was a bit smoky there. So I plugged the wastegate thingy back in and took out my makeshift boost controller.
If my logic serves me well...
1] With the wastegate actuator, the pressure switch might be limiting boost. That would happen if there is too much unmeasured air (AMM problem) going in, right? Without the wastegate, all that air gets in... and I can control it via boost pressure with the boost controller... but that still doesn't solve the initial problem. Also, even without the wastegate, the low rpms, lack of power, rpms dropping, and tranmission banging still happens are still happening.. but the turbo is pushing air into the engine so the banging is not as noticeable.
2] There is also dashpoint adjustment... apparently dashpoint is different on turbocharged AUTOMATIC vehicles... this car was originally a 3speed automatic, recently converted in the last year to stick shift.
3] Air flow controlled by throttle valve in throttle housing...
4] AIC - continuing adjustment to idle speed, bypass air passage
5] Deceleration fuel shutoff -- ELCD
The first one seems to be the best idea about what is going on. I don't have the diagnostic equipment to test the AMM. Bentley manual has a chart...
- Erractic Idling
- Poor response on acceleration
- Engine erractic in all speed ranges
- Excessive Fuel Consumption
- Engine fails to rev up (no power)
Problems with the AMM or O2 sensor or coolant temp... are what Bentley suggests the problem is.
So in conclusion, the boost controller helped but didn't solve the underlying problem ... and the car began running poorly again anyways.
Help! I want to rally this car!
