For this test (which is brilliant, I never thought of checking for a faulty connection using a parallel ammeter! I suppose that just shows my lack of experience), you'll probably want your resistance for the ammeter pretty low... but start high to make sure. The reason for that resistance is to protect your meter. So start with high resistance, to protect the meter in case the connection is in fact bad, and if you get no current go to lower resistance. I've never done this test but that's what I'd do.
