So if this unit is still in the car you should consider the external causes, e.g. bum shift linkage, motor mounts, etc. Then take off the side cover, the one with the dipstick, and look at the reverse gears. If the gears show only light wear you may be able to keep reverse engaged by modifying the reverse engagement lever (if that hasn't already been done). If the pinion or reverse mainshaft gear teeth are badly hurt then it's not likely to stay engaged in any event. The photo shows gears from a '92 gearbox that I was told "Wouldn't stay in reverse". I bought that gearbox for $75 and was lucky, it only needed reverse gears, which by the way, are getting very scarce (good used ones that is).
