Nick,
If you have spares I strongly recommend that you sell them to me quickly (nyuk nyuk). They are not all interchangeable. There are early reverse gears (pre-'89) and late ones ('89 and later). They can be quickly differentiated because the late mainshaft gear has an identifying groove cut around it (no groove on early gears) and the late pinion gear has narrow tooth tips (broad tips on early gears). They have other important geometric differences but those are the "quick look" identifiers. The cluster gear is part of the reverse power train so early gearboxes must have early reverse gears and late boxes get late reverse gears, no exceptions.
You can replace the reverse idler gear in the car but it requires removing the final drive so you can slip the idler pinion shaft back (a lot of work). There's no way to replace the reverse mainshaft gear without complete disassembly of the unit, it's nearly the last part that comes out.
One other thing that could cause poor reverse engagement or popping out would be defective idler gear bushings but I've only seen that once or maybe twice so I don't tend to look for it. If the idler gear is floppy on it's shaft then the bushings are shot or displaced but after that happens the gear teeth will be quickly wrecked anyway.
