Faulty temperature gauge?

I have a temperature gauge on a 92 900 that will only indicate slightly below half and not any higher with an obviously higher engine temperature.
When grounding the wire to the temp sender (which has been changed with a new sender)the gauge indicates full hot and then returns to cold when ungrounded. Seems normal to me but when connected only will still only indicate as before, slightly below half.
I tested the water temp when the fan comes on and appears normal (185-190) but the gauge indicates low compared to before indicating 3/4 warm when the fan turned on. The radiator fan switch appears to be operating normally.
I have read the ground can cause indication issues but havnt been able to locate the ground point for the instruments. I guess the logic of the gauge itself may be bad.
Any ideas would be greatly appeciated thanks jk
