The Saab AC system is similar to others, and any qualified AC shop should be able to repair it. It is not an impossible DIY, but it is very messy, requires sepecial tools and labor intensive. I 1st tried to rehab mine DIY using R134a, even bought the vac gauges, but it was a pain. Plus evacuating the system takes a shop any way (unless you have a specialized vacuum equipment). It worked pretty well for a few weeks, actually, but in the end my compressor seized (not enough oil) despite flushing and cleaning the system. I found the cost of all of the equipment, and the shop vacuum, was almost as much as paying someone else to do the whole thing. The second go around I paid someone else to do it (live and learn).
R12 is still available, and that is another advantage of a professional shop over DIY. The R12 is cooler (my Saabs can get freezing cold), but needs a specialist to install.
Once installed the Saab AC require the same maintanence as any other auto AC, that is, not much.
