Some owners removed or cut their a/c belts due to bad rattly noise from shot a/c idler pulley. That's why my '89 SPG is w/o belt. In fact, before I felt and found the wobbly pulley, I was on a tear about timing chain noise, even replaced the cam cover chain guide, but no change in the terrible noise. Cut the belt - end of noise. If you discover that there is wobble in the idler pulley, you can get a replacement from eeuroparts.
If your machine has the original '89 a/c hoses, they need to be replaced as they will not hold a new charge. Mine were replaced by a wonderful Saab shop in Marietta, Georgia, also converted to R134, all about $600, in 2004. a/c tuneup usually consists of testing for belt and compressor operation, next a leak test of system, then new hoses if necessary, then a conversion and charge with R134. It can run a ton of bucks for cold air.
